18' Wide Guide Skiff
The 18' Wide Guide was developed from a previous design that was never built. This design was developed for a fly fishing guide here on Cape Cod as a shallow draft fly-fishing craft capable of navigating the waters of Nauset Marsh and Nauset Inlet on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Wide Guide is a wider version of that design.
The boat can be purchased at this point, and finished by the owner, or a custom interior can be designed and built by Old Wharf Dory Co. A typical interior for a small fishing skiff would include a self-bailing deck and a small center console. Various storage options can be built in, also side benches, thwarts, casting platforms, live wells, etc. Since each boat is custom built just for you, you can get it the way you want it. The Wide Guide is built using the best quality materials available combined in modern composite construction techniques. BS 1088 approved Marine Plywood is scarfed to length, then carefully laid out and cut to shape. These shaped panels are temporarily held in place by wire or cable ties, and bonded permanently together with high-strength epoxy putty. The temporary fasteners are removed, and the joints are further reinforced on each side with 17 oz. non-woven biaxial fiberglass tape set in epoxy. These joints are faired, then the boat is sheathed with fiberglass cloth set in epoxy on the outside, and coated with epoxy on the inside. Flotation chambers are built and filled with 2 lb. density foam, then the strip-planked side decks are laminated in place. These side decks give the boat great strength. This basically completes the bare hull.
One of the advantages of plywood-epoxy composite construction is its light weight. This boat will plane with 25 HP, and 50 HP is the maximum suggested power.It is also very easy to handle on and off a trailer, and will float in 6" of water. This boat is excellent for exploring and fishing shallows not accessible to boats of deeper draft.
