For Sale, NARWHAL. A 26 foot sailboat “Birdwatcher II” design sailboat by Phil Bolger.
Built in 2008 by carpenter and owner Stu Gunn.
Used primarily as daysailer and camp cruiser on Cape Cod Bay MA, and Moosehead Lake, ME.
The hull is a “sharpie” style with flat bottom, which only draws a few inches of depth with board up, making it fully beachable, and good for exploring shallow backwaters. The mast and centerboard are off-center, which leaves a full two foot wide open space down the center line of the hull.
Two sets of sails. The colorful Main sail was originally from ALOHA class, was bought in “like new”
condition. It has a negative roach, i.e. No battens. It has become our most used main sail.
The larger white main sail, also bought used, was a little baggy. We recut it to flatten it, and also gave it a negative roach to eliminate the battens.
Two standard jibs are also included. The jibs attach to an off-center bowsprit. Hence the name NARWHAL.

The rig is called a Solent Lug rig. The main sail is lashed to a spar (yard) which is raised by the halyard. The yard hangs vertically and extends the height of the mast. The tack of the sail (lower corner) is then cleated snugly down to a cleat at the bottom of the mast.
The hull is double ended and the stern-most frame extends to support the small deck over the stern. The motor hangs on that frame on the starboard side.
The mast has no stays. It is easily raised. One sets the butt of the mast against a frame, and walks the mast up. The butt moves into a pocket in the hull and the mast is locked into a socket on deck.
Besides being a fun and swift daysailer, we have had great fun camp cruising. The glassed side walls make the boat an effective blind for wildlife watching.

9/1/26 - my Atlantic 17, Punkin, is for sale!! I am getting old, and getting in and out is not fun or easy any more. She’s a great rowing boat, I will be sorry to see her go. Price is $4,000.00 boat only, $5,000.00 with trailer. More info and photos soon.
